Calculation Methods
The percentage is calculated as: numerator divided by denominator times 100.
Numerator including inclusion/exclusion

Number of screen eligible individuals who had a FOBT within past two years, other investigations (e.g. flexible sigmoidoscopy) within the past 10 years, or a colonoscopy within the past 10 years.

Inclusions:

  • Fecal occult blood testing (L181 or G004, L179, Q152, Q043, Q133) in the past 2 years
  • Colonoscopy in the previous 10 years (Z555 plus one of E740 or E741 or E747 or E705 on the same day)
  • Flexible rigid sigmoidoscopy (Z535 or Z536) in the previous 10 years (Z555 (without E740 or E741 or E747 or E705 on the same day) or Z580)
Denominator including inclusion/exclusion

Number of screen-eligible patients aged 50 to 74 years.

Exclusions:

  • Patients with a missing or invalid Health Card Number, date of birth or postal code
  • Patients who have had colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease in the past five years

Caveats and Limitations
A small proportion of FOBTs performed as diagnostic tests could not be excluded from the analysis. FOBTs analyzed in hospital labs could not be captured.
Comments Detailed
This is an additional QIP indicator for 2017/18. Current performance reporting period: annually. Primary Care Group Practice reports are available to family health teams and CHCs that register. For more information visit www.hqontario.ca/pcreport. Primary care organizations not registered to receive group practice reports will be required to extract data from EMRs. Alternate source is Cancer Care Ontario’s Screening Activity Report (family health teams) and EMRs (all models). For 2017/18, two colorectal cancer screening indicators are included as additional indicators.
